MSME stands for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. In a developing country like India, MSME industries are the backbone of the economy.

The MSME sector contributes to 45% of India’s Total Industrial Employment, 50% of India’s Total Exports and 95% of all industrial units of the country and more than 6000 types of products are manufactured in these industries (As per msme.gov.in). When these industries grow, the economy of the country grows as a whole and flourishes. These industries are also known as small-scale industries or SSI’s.

Composite Criteria: Investment in Plant & Machinery/equipment and Annual Turnover





Manufacturing Enterprises and Enterprises rendering Services

Investment in Plant and Machinery or Equipment:
Not more than Rs.1 crore and Annual Turnover ; not more than Rs. 5 crore

Investment in Plant and Machinery or Equipment:
Not more than Rs.10 crore and Annual Turnover ; not more than Rs. 50 crore

Investment in Plant and Machinery or Equipment:
Not more than Rs.50 crore and Annual Turnover ; not more than Rs. 250 crore

  • Aadhar number is compulsory for registering under the MSME act. Any enterprise that qualifies under the definition of MSME can obtain Udaym Registration under the MSME Act. An application is to be filed online using Udyam Registration Portal for obtaining Udyam.

    Udyam Registration is a completely online registration process and once the form is filled and submitted on the Udyam Registration portal, the registration certificate will be issued after a few days. The Udyam Registration has lifetime validity unless cancelled.

The Udyam registration process is entirely online and does not require the uploading of any documents. However, before applying for Udyam Registration, the proprietor or owner of the enterprise is required to have the following documents:

  • Aadhar Card
    • In the case of a Proprietorship Firm, the Aadhar number of the proprietor is to be entered in the Udyam Registration form.
    • In the case of a Partnership Firm, the Aadhar number of the managing partner is to be entered in the Udyam Registration form.
    • In the case of a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), the Aadhar number of the Karta is to be entered in the Udyam Registration form.
    • In the case of a Company or Limited Liability Partnership or a Cooperative Society or a Society or a Trust, the Aadhar number of the organisation or authorised signatory is to be entered in the Udyam Registration form.
  • PAN Card

The above documents need not be uploaded but the Aadhar and PAN number of the entrepreneur is required to be entered in the registration form.

  • MSMEs registered under the Ministry of MSMEs get priority on applications of licenses and certificates issued by the Government of India.

  • A registered MSME gets various rebates and concessions on patents and the costs of setting up industry. 

  • Owners of registered MSMEs can easily access credit for their businesses.

  • MSMEs are given preference for government tenders on the Udyam Registration Portal as it is integrated with Government e-Marketplace and other portals that give ease of access to MSMEs on marketplaces and e-tenders.

  • MSMEs can avail a One Time Settlement Fee for delayed or non-paid amounts of MSME.

MSME certificate is valid as long as the business is operational. Moreover, it is issued for a lifetime as long as the classification criteria are met.
Since the composite method of categorization is put in place, businesses are subject to cancellation in case the annual turnover is exceeded and no longer fits in the category of small businesses.
